Finding Data
One way to find data on "how to find data on the web" is to do a search on the Web.  Of the many search engines to be found, I used Google for this topic.  Among the first listed hits:

Finding Data on the Internet - Robert Niles asks you to "scroll down to the links below and your days of coming up empty while reporting are over. You'll soon be checking facts and downloading reputable data on everything from public safety to campaign contributions ... you name it."  He also offers, "in plain English, ...some basic concepts in statistics that every writer should know..."

GIS - Geographic Information Systems - Stanford University offers a page of links, some of which link to other pages of links, guiding you to Web Sites for Digital GIS Data.

Looking for COUNTRY statistics?

A good reference can be found at the State Department. They maintain a database of background notes. Here is the index of countries.

Looking for sports statistics?

A Google search on "baseball statistics" points to baseball-reference.com, USA Today, the Baseball Archive, ESPN, CBS, CNN-SI, and Major League Baseball, itself, on the first page of links.

A Google search on "basketball statistics"  or "hockey statistics" yields similar results, although baseball seems to be more popular among the statisticians.

More esoteric data

Back to the first link on this page, Robert Niles offers search links for U.S. Government, Agriculture, Crime, Economics, Education, Energy, Finding People, Health, Investing, Language, Law and Politics
